Once an alternator is “auto-tuned”, the user can not de-commission it. A new firmware update would be required. Firmware updates are OTA (over-the-air) and available from a download page whose URL is sent to purchasers only. Firmware is compiled and encrypted software and use is covered by a software licence you will need to agree to before auto-tuning.

Charging from an Alternator Extract Power from a 12V Alternator to charge 24V, 36V to 48V Lithium using the alternators internal regulator Extract Power from a 24V Alternator to charge 36V to 48V Lithium using the alternators internal regulator Auto-tunes with 3 “idle modes” of Soft, Medium, Hard. Soft has significantly reduced charging at idle; whereas hard is designed to charge at the absolute maxim when solar yield is poor and engine idle is solar backup. Medium is a happy blend in between. Impossible to have a “load dump” with internal regulator alternator: If the Lithium battery being charged closes a “no charge relay”, the contained energy in Scotty reverses direction to the low side starter battery. Impossible to damage alternator from excessive load: Temperature sensor located on alternator triggers power reduction AND voltage sense reduces power instantly the alternator voltage drops below set threshold. Allows the starter battery to still charge to lead acid bulk level and so avoid damage. Happens immediately after engine start. Multihull application with twin engine alternators to one house battery source can have twin Scotty’s between them to prevent surging of loads from one engine plus keeps factory 12V system Smart Alternator Selectable for Auto-tuning Extract Power from 48V Alternator by external regulation to charge a 48V house bank up to 7,500W and at the same time extract power up to 3000W or deliver power to 12V starter battery and 12V loads up to 3000W Extract Power from 48V Alternator by external regulation to charge a 48V house bank up to 7,500W and at the same time extract power up to 3000W or deliver power to 24V starter battery and 24V loads up to 3000W Euro 6.2 compliance is achieved with energy management. This allows the starter battery to be used as an energy source when starting/idling or using “stop start”. We don’t know of any other device that supports this compliance as well as Scotty. Manufacturers like Mercedes Benz may recommend limits for DC to DC power on the primary alternator. This is done for primarily two reasons: 1) A large DC to DC with a constant load at idle may overload the alternator and 2) A large DC to DC with a constant load at idle would defeat Euro 6 standards. With Scotty AI, both situations are avoided and DC to DC only comes on at nominated RPM. Separately, the sensitive alternator voltage measurement and temperature measurement ensures the alternator is not pulled down below capacity.

Bi-Directional DC to DC When engine is off: Scotty AI reverses direction when the voltage threshold is met. This is adjustable by the user and is called “camping mode”. This maintains a minimum voltage at the starter battery and associated loads. Power transfer 3000W or 1500W. In particular, supports high current requirements of winches or windlasses of all types at the starter battery. Allows Victron Multiplus II 12V 3000VA to operate on 12V side pulling power through Scotty AI from the Lithium battery side. Popular with 24V and 36V trolling motor applications. Scotty responds faster than the Victron Multiplus to load changes so the Inverter will not trip. (note special Safiery programming of Inverter/Charger required) Smart Battery Protect is built into Scotty AI for Lithium power flow to starter battery with voltage set point that automatically turns off this function. Independent Smart Battery Protect is used on starter battery to 12V or 24V loads that automatically turns off power flow to protect starter battery. Uses small “voltage sense” positive and negative wires to Lithium battery to detect voltage condition acurately. This allows for fast detection of loads for fast response. Charges Lithium Battery till voltage threshold met, then moves to absorb mode for cell balancing, then relaxes to a constant voltage “float voltage”. Values are set by the user. While in constant voltage “float voltage”, a sudden increase in load will trigger “power matching” to deliver required power to load but still maintain a “float voltage” condition. For batteries with an external BMS relay fitted, activation (or inverse) condition will immediately push Scotty to “float voltage” which will be less than the BMS cut off voltage and effectively stop charging immediately. Lithium Battery temperature reading feature allows for “stop charge” in a defined temperature range.

Pro’s and Con’s of using external or internal alternator regulator At idle, Scotty AI produces more power typically than an externally regulated alternator like Wakespeed. At high revs, if the alternator is > 3000W, the external regulator will produce more power. External regulator mode matches alternator voltage and lithium voltage as same voltage. There is no in built DC DC in Wakespeed regulator. A separate DC DC like Scotty needs to be added. Scotty with internal alternator regulator does not experience load dumps. Scotty with internal alternator regulator can have dead short on 48v side (towing example) with no spark nor fuss as contained energy collapses onto starter battery. Drop a spanner for a dead short and it just digitally turns off and back on. Scotty with internal alternator regulator is Automotive Grade and more reliable and robust.

1) Include a 3A fuse and switch on the Scotty ignition/enable/ wire of the harness. 2) Include a 5A fuse on the 5V+ circuit that powers the optional Scotty Touch Display. 3) Leave the engine turned o ff . Have your High Side (HS) batteries connected and isolator turned on. Your system should be ready to go except engine is turned o ff . 4) Open phone/tablet/laptop wifi > scan> connect to “Scotty_***” password 12345678. 5) Once connected, the “wheel connection indicator may still be turning” as there is no internet. Go to browser (we use Chrome) and type in 172.24.24.1 (same as Victron) 6) There are several steps on Auto-tuning. 1. Scotty AI flashes status: green: all good; any red is error. App explains. 2. Navigate to ”Tuning page”. Read instructions: start car ,and wait 2 minutes. 3. Fill in the Alternator size in Amps? 7) Go to setting page and set Camping Voltage. If not, there is a text guide on what to do to troubleshoot. Follow the interactive text. 7) You are ready to go. User Manual 4. Please update HS battery parameter? 5. Click Auto Tune and Monitor Messages. 1) Touch Idle Setting: “Soft” for around town if you are getting su ffi cient replenishment power. Go to “Medium” for first time users who are unsure. Go to “Hard” to drive the maximum at idle: good when weather is poor; alternator replenishment backup. 2) Select “OFF” for no alternator charging but still HS> LS charging. Example is yacht wanting max power from engine or simply 48V to 12V or 24V DC DC. 3) If you have Scotty Touch Display> Swipe right or left. Rotate for Idle mode setting. Things to Know/Check 1) The Status section shows real time performance. It also shows the power loss in Watts for alternator (LS) side and battery side (HS) if CAN BMS. 2) There are “Setting” pages for selective manual tuning. If you don’t know what these are, just leave these settings unless instructed to change them. 3) There is a “diagnostics” section and a link to a “Potential Solutions Guidance” page. 4) There is also a page describing the terminology we use: “Parameter Description” at bottom of “tuning page”. 5) Firmware update: Engine is OFF. Go to Safiery.com/scottyai Download firmware to the phone (disconnect from Scotty WiFi). Then change Wifi back to Enjoy and send us feedback. “Would you like fries with that”. If it is not used Scotty AI will not function. Cable #2 marked Current Sense - is used for power supply to Scotty Touch Display as 5V+ Output. If no display, just leave coiled up and reserved. Cable #18 marked Temperature Probe is used for Temp Sense Positive. Cut the current temperature “ring” o this cable. Connect this to the positive of the new temperature sensor. We use the same temperature sensors Victron Supply with Multiplus inverters. After cutting o the ring, Cable #19 marked Temperature Probe is used for GND (Black) Cable #20 marked “ignition or power” is to be connected to the High Side (48V typically) Cable #11 marked CAN + is CAN hi for connection to CANbus Cable #12 marked CAN - is CAN hi for connection to CANbus Cable #21 marked “Feature In” is to be used to disable charge from a BMS “stop charge” relay. A high signal allows charger. There is an “inverted” selection in the app for reverse condition wiring. Harness Cabling (instructions are for upgrade Scotty to Scotty AI). For new Scotty AI Cable numbers are the same. New labelling on its way but you may have Scotty Ver 1 labelling.
